Conspicuous Aliens

In my dream, I'm waiting next to my car. I'm waiting because some people that I've never yet want to borrow it. In my dream, it made more sense why I was waiting and how this whole borrowing thing worked - maybe it was some variant of Flexcar of something.

A family shows up to pick up the car and I ask them if they don't mind dropping me off nearby. I explain that I would be grateful if they helped me although I could manage either way. They seem congenial enough and agree to take me. We climb into the car, I get in the back seat with the kids and the mother while the father sits in the front - on the passenger side. No one gets in the driver's seat.

Then, the car starts driving.

I get suspicious. Mainly because the car is diving but no one is in the driver's seat.

The father is sitting on the passenger side and smiling contently. The whole family sits calmly while the car drives itself. It takes me a moment to realize why all this is happening but I come to the obvious conclusion fairly quickly. These people are aliens, not humans at all. To test my theory, I say a couple things in alien.

In a buzzy insect-like alien language:
"What are you doing? That's right, I speak alien and I know you understand me."

Now, they start to glance at each other nervously.

"Look", I say, "I know you're aliens. That's fine. But don't you realize that when you drive a car someone is actually supposed to drive the car? You can't do it like this, you'll get pulled over. You people are so bad at this. Where did you learn about humans anyway? Seriously, if you get caught it'll be straight to the alien autopsy for the lot of you. I don't even know if I want you to borrow my car now."

Cold Rain

Last night, I dreamed about French snow. I was at some kind of ski lodge or something and a large number of my friends and acquaintances were all mingling outside. Someone I've known for a long time told me that she was getting married and wondered if I could teach her to speak french so that she could impress her husband.

I told her that French is a really easy language to learn. All you need to know is:

1. "devoir" is the verb to indicate that something is nessessary. "je dois" means "I must."
2. "Il pleut" means "it's raining."
3. "Il neige" also means "it's raining" but in this case it's a kind of a strange cold rain.

I'm not sure why I considered those phrases to be the entirety of the French language or why I choose to translate "neige" as "a strange cold rain" instead of the more common "snow."

Iced Cream

I had a dream last night that I was eating ice cream. But not just ice cream, more like a bucket of ice cream

The Devil is in the Dream Tales

I'm not really sure what I dreamed about last night but I know that it included the devil, a creature with probiscii for arms and when I woke up in the middle of the night I felt compelled to make sure the doors were locked.

A Party and a UFO

I had a dream recently that I was at a party. It was in a house that I didn't recognize with twenty to thirty people that I've never seen before. People were wrapping presents for some unknown event. Throughout the dream, I mingle. I can tell by the way that I'm mingling that these people are my friends. Maybe, even the house is mine, I don't know. What I found interesting about the dream is that usually the people and places in my dreams correspond to people and places in the real world. When I am in my house in a dream, it may look weird and out of proportion but I know that it corresponds to my house in the real world. This dream felt like I was living a totally separate dream existance with it's own unique geography and population.

On a related note, I was lying in bed half asleep a few months ago (it was the morning after those UFO sightings in Stephenville, Texas) while my girlfriend was on the internet looking for video or images of the UFOs. She finally found a news program that put up some of their coverage. So, S woke me up so that I could watch it with her. I glanced over at the screen.

What I saw was huge shape, like a large flying wing that slid effortlessly across the clear sky. This thing was about a mile long and constantly changing shape like a giant work of origami. It was unmistakably real and foreign to human engineering. I remember thinking excitedly to myself that this will be the video that will finally put the mystery of UFOs to rest. Definitive proof has been found.

Then, I woke up. I had dreamed the whole thing while hearing the audio from my girlfriend's computer. She had tried to wake me up to watch but I had fallen back to sleep before I had the chance.

Let me tell you, watching the actual clip after my dream clip was so incredibly disappointing. It looks like a video of a raver with a glow stick taken by a cheap digital camera that's been dropped down the stairs a few times.

We Three Dreams

The other night was a red-letter day (or night) for dreams. I had three good ones in quick succession

Dream 1: It starts out with me working as a tech in a TV studio. The show is the Larry King show and Al Gore is the guest. So, I'm just standing around watching the monitors and the checking the audio. Gore is talking about his movie or something when he gets a weird confused look on his face. He's having trouble with some words and his movements are no longer very natural.

I suspect pretty quickly that Gore's having a stroke. I bring up this possibility to the producer and everyone else in the room but no one does anything more than shrugging. Larry King doesn't seem to notice that anything might be wrong either. A few seconds later, Gore collapses on the floor. Finally, some people rush into the room to care for him.

Then, as I'm leaving the studio after work, I'm completely surprised to Gore wandering around in the hall wearing an overcoat but no shirt. I ask him if he's ok and if anyone's taking care of him. He really should have been sent to a hospital. Gore says not to worry and that he’s fine he's clearly confused. In the elevator on the way out of the building, he has another stroke. I call 911 and try to keep him from dying until some paramedics show up.

Dream 2: I'm twelve years old and studying street crime and underground economies (a la one of my real life heroes, Sudhir Venkatesh). For some reason, the study entails me walking around taking notes and pictures of various criminal activities in a very sketchy neighborhood.

For some other reason, a riot breaks out. One of the local crime lords decides that he doesn't like me recording everything so he attempts to assassinate me by dumping buckets of baby snapping turtles into my apartment. The turtles come at me like little green bullets. In desperation, I abandon the house and run like a maniac down the middle of the road. The little biters merge into a dog-sized turtle that bounds after me.

In the end, a bit of quick thinking saves me. I realized that small animals can only combine like Voltron in dreams and since I'm dreaming I might as well stand and fight.

Dream 3: I can't remember the third dream. Interpolating from the first two, I would deduce that it involved marshmallows, dancing and a sonic boom.

Biking the Orient

Last night I had a dream that I was in a Japanese velodrome translating Chinese announcements into English for American tourists. As an added bonus, the stuff that the announcer was saying had nothing to do with bicycling but consisted mainly of cake making directions.

That's how I roll when I'm sleeping.

The Old School

The other night, I had a dream that I went to pick up someone from my old high school. When I walked up to the building, I started to recognize some of the students at the school. These kids were the same ones that I went to school with and were wearing the same things. It was almost as if I had gone back in time.

The weird thing was that dream was able to dig up the memories of people that my conscious mind had long forgotten. It makes me realize that a lot of memory must be buried deep in my mind waiting for something like a dream to let it out.

The Fellowship of the Union

Last night, I dreamed that I was negotiating a contract for a labor union at some kind of foundry. Somehow characters from The Lord of the Rings were all mixed in. Gimli was the foreman, Legolas the VP at the company, Gandalf the old man about to retire and so forth. Hillary Clinton also made a cameo.

Clean Sleep

Last night, I dreamt I took a shower in my pajamas.

That was the entire dream.

As Above so Below

In my dream, it is night and I climb up the side of a long embankment the size of a mountain. I get to the top and look out over a lake greenish and deep like Crater Lake in Oregon. The only sources of light are thousands shimmering yellow and white stars. I walk out on a long perch over the lake and look cautiously over the edge to see large dark moving shapes in the water far below me. I feel small.

I can't get a sense of depth beneath the water so it's difficult to tell exactly how large the circling shapes are. As I look down, I turn my attention to the lake's rolling surface and notice small points shifting back and forth with the waves. I look closer and realize that the points are yellow and white flowers catching the dim light of the stars. Then, I see the reflection of the stars in the water too. The stars and the flowers are sometimes distinct and at other times blend and transform into one another. It kind of looks like this video I took of the reflection of Christmas lights off a canal in Delft.

I get the sense that I'm supposed to jump. Part of me is to scared and walks back off away from the edge but another part dives. As I fall towards the surface of the water, I see my reflection rising up at me from the depths. When I hit the water, I go under and my reflection jumps out.

Taxiing Through Your Neighborhood

I had a dream last night that I was traveling to some exotic island paradise with a bunch of my friends. We all met at my parents house and climbed on to a 747 that was sitting in the front yard. The plane proceeded to taxi at high speeds along the tight swerving back roads of Bedford Hills presumably on it's way to the airport.

Every once and a while ,on a relative straight away, the plane would fire up its engines and try to take off. It was a mix of my fear of flying dreams and my "I'm back on the bus to school" dreams. Scary.

Spiders, Spiders Everywhere

I had a dream last night that I was staying with my family in a hotel room full of spiders. I was freaking out trying to brush them off me and vacuum them up while my brother who is actually afraid of spiders just ignored them and went to sleep. That feeling of being immersed in spiders lasted for a few minutes after I woke up.

The moral of the story is: Don't sleep with the fan on you even if it's hot. That wind will penetrate the superficial layers of your body and cause some wind type diseases like headaches, stiff neck or in my case formication (no, not fornication you dirty birdies).

The other day, I was in a gas station and some guy with an African accent was telling the cashier not to sit to long with the fan on her because it will make her sick. It makes me think that African traditional medicine has a concept of wind, too.

President Hobo

So, I'm following JFK and Jackie O down the sidewalks of Dallas while they're on their way to some strange skyscraper/church to the wedding of one of the more obscure Kennedy brothers. The place is fairly deserted and the clouds cast a weird sepia tone over everything. Suddenly, a loud bang crackles through the air and Jackie O enthusiastically leaps on top of JFK to shield him with her body.

She's so into it that he's forced to cower against the wall while the secret service are scrambling around like ants on a freshly kicked anthill. JFK finally gets up and rushes into the church with the secret service close behind. No one is hurt. Then, even though the entire presidential party is safely in the church, some more shots ring out. I trace the sound back to it's source and discover a bunch of construction worker running around a building site firing rifles at the girders. Possibly because of their love of the second amendment, rifles play some role in the construction industry in Dallas.

But, the secret service still has no idea where the shots came from. So, they come up with the brilliant idea of disguising Kennedy as a hobo to protect him. To complete the illusion, they send JFK stumbling ahead alone while they follow about a block behind.

The plan works as far as it get the hobo president across town and into an old two story house badly in need of repairs. JFK stumbles through the front door to find the CIA agents all sitting around playing poker, smoking cigarettes in dirty wife beaters and wholly unprepared to see the president dressed in rags. But, being professionals, it doesn't take long for them to spring into action.

While everyone's setting up chairs and wiping down tables and moving large pieces of radio equipment around make things a bit more presidential, I take the opportunity to talk to the coordinator of the safe house. For no reason that I can discern, I ask him why he joined the CIA. He gets a distant look in his eye, then starts shaking his fists at the heavens and yelling "Damn you, Castro!". He picks up a sledgehammer that's lying around and starts smashing everything in front of him (including the flimsy walls). The whole house collapses.

I thought that dream was weird when I had it but now I find out that there's an actual conspiracy theory that JFK was killed as part of a hobo plot. I guess people who've seen the Oliver Stone movie already know about this. And now, looking at that combination of Rockwell and a JFK portrait is giving me some wicked deja vu.

Cats in the Backseat

I had a dream last night that I drove my car into a lake. While that's typical dream stuff, what was weird was that as the car slowly sunk into the water I realized the backseat was filled with cats and infants. It's one of those dream puzzlers. Dream dilemma. So, trying to save both, I started to throw the cats towards the shore with the hope that I could then carry the tiny babies to safety. But, the cats kept swimming back to the boat. Luckily, I woke up before anyone was harmed.

Reno 911

To you novice sleepers out there I say this:

Don't go to sleep right after eating big meal!

Last night, I learned that the hard way when I was chased around a dream airport by the ex-Attorney General and queen of the lady suit, Janet Reno. Please, just let me on the plane, Miss Reno.

The really strange part is that she wasn't even towering over me or chasing me around like in a monster dream. This was a battle of wits complete with disguises, comic misdirection and witty taunts. It only ended when I woke up in the middle of the night to a rousing round of what the hell is going on in my brain?!?. Was my poor unsuspecting mind switched in the middle of the night with Folgers crystal meth (republican edition)?
