The contrast in Republican sentiment toward the Alito versus Sottomayor comments was brought out in the hearing. However, as is usually the case, Democracts couldn't follow-up with a successful argument outside of the hearings - i.e. to the press. If they had handled her nomination properly she would have got at the very least 70-75 votes. As it stands she will probably only get 61. Not a big deal for her nomination, but could be ammunition for conservative Republicans next fall as her nomination and soon to be confirmation has become controversial when it should have been smooth sailing (again, from a PR perspective as opposed to her actual nomination, which was assured the moment she was nominated).
